Great Wedding Cake Icing For a Tastier Cake

A wedding cake that looks beautiful and elegant is truly a great thing. However, if that cake was made with poorly chosen wedding cake icing, well, it's going to taste like crap and no amount of decorations or designs will change that fact. That said, really think about your choices when it comes to the icing for wedding cake.

The most common as well as most popular cake icing is undoubtedly buttercream. Buttercream icing is incredibly easy to design & decorate with, it's cheap, and it tastes great to boot. The drawback to this icing is that it bleeds easily as the temperature climbs.

Another tasty wedding cake icing is marzipan. Marzipan can be used to in the baking of the cake as well as for the covering and filling of cake. Ingredients in this icing are sugar, eggs, and most importantly almonds. This particular cake icing isn't the cheapest, so be prepared to spend a bit more if you want it for your cake.

If you're cake is going to have numerous intricate decorations and designs, then fondant and/or sugar gum paste will be the likely choice. Both of these icings harden after they're put on so that the details remain in place. The big drawback to these icings is that they aren't very tastier -- in fact, some people may go as far as saying they taste pretty bad. If you can, do without this icing or use a very little amount.

Royal icing is the definite choice for simple cakes with simple designs & decorations. This icing is easy to work, cheap, and quite tasty -- making it a perfect choice for amateur bakers whom want to try making & designing their own wedding cake.

Remember to put give some serious thought toward your wedding cake icing. Although a seemingly simple aspect, your cake's icing will effect taste, appearance, and even the price!

The Dream Wedding Cake

Some may say that the grandiose of the wedding reception is the wedding cake. Wedding cakes have dramatically changed over the decades, just as any art form molds and changes throughout the times. There are also different spins on the idea of the traditional wedding cake. The modern wedding consists of eighty-sixin' some old wedding traditions and implementing new, creative themes and ideas. One thing that has stayed constant, but ever changing at the same time, is the wedding cake. Important choices to make when finding your wedding cake are budget, design, and flavor.

Cake budget has been on the minds of brides for as long as wedding planning has been going on. However, the opinions are changing at a rapid rate. The base budget of your cake, whenever you decide what your budget is, is going to be the "per slice" fee. Most bakeries and cake designers start with that. Cakes range from $1.50 per slice (for do it yourself brides) to $20.00 per slice, for the most elaborate cake design, with the "per slice" fee being said, its important you coordinate this to the amount of RSVPs that you've received. Remember, those who eat the main course, will also expect cake. The average wedding cake costs around $550.00. There is no set design or tier that coordinates with this cost. It all depends on who you get to design your cake and how many embellishments that you add to it.

The design element of the cake deciphers how much you pay for it, after deciding how many mouths you want to feed. The two main frosting types for wedding cakes are: butter-cream and fondant. Butter-cream is far less expensive than fondant and traditionally tastes better. Embellishments like fondant pearls, gum paste flowers, and multiple tiers will add additional costs to the cake. Since the topic of design is up to bat, there have been new spins and creations on the traditional cake concept. Some brides are choosing to serve "mini cakes" to their guests that would otherwise replicate a large centerpiece. Others opt for cupcakes designed around a cupcake tree, a structure built to hold individual cup cakes somewhat in the shape of a cascading tree.

It has to taste good. Glass half-empty personalities would often say that wedding cake doesn't even taste good and they don't know why brides spend money on it. Well, today's cakes are not from your mother's wedding. Today's bakers and cake specialists are coming up with some of the most creative and delicious flavors to incorporate in wedding cakes. Flavors can range from the traditional vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry to some fun and elaborate tastes such as butter pecan, Italian cream, and pear. Bakers are incorporating fruit flavors in between cake layers and drizzling chocolate over the tops of layers to act as a bonding agent.

Whether your cake is round, square, abstract, or traditional, we are sure that with the top three things to think about when designing your wedding cake, you will feel confident knowing that you planned ahead.

The dream wedding cake may not be as expensive as you may be thinking. If you want to find a wedding cake that matches your personality as well as your budget, Dallas Platinum Weddings has some bakeries in mind that we can get you matched up with.

It is one of those things that brides and wedding planners worry about almost as much as obtaining the perfect wedding gown.

In fact, there are an limitless number of cake designs. No matter the personality or sense of style of a bride, there is a wedding cake out there that can satisfy her wants and desires for the type of wedding cake she has always dreamed of for her special day.

One of the most delightfully inspiring types of cakes are those that include wedding cake flowers. When you decide that you want flowers on your wedding cake, there are various things from which you can choose for decorating your wedding cake. For instance, when you choose to include flowers for a wedding cake you can select any color that you can imagine to match your wedding colors and wedding theme.

There are various types of flowers from which you can choose and they come in an assortment of colors. Some you can even have dyed to suit the occasion. Of course, you can either choose to use real wedding flowers that are safe as edible flowers. Do be sure to choose edible flowers that are not contaminated by toxic chemicals. When you are working with real flowers you will need to be especially careful to choose wisely, especially when you include the use of edible wedding cake flowers. It is recommendable that while choosing edible flowers for your wedding cake that you consult with your florist before making your decision.

You may also choose to use artificial flowers or silk flowers for your wedding flowers. These are a great choice when you have allergies or you know that some of your wedding guests have allergies to flowers. They are also a great alternative to real cakes since they are a bit more inexpensive. Silk flowers make some beautiful wedding flower cake toppers and are the type of flowers that make wonderful wedding keepsakes, since they are so long lasting in their beauty.

While considering your wedding flower cake you may also want to consider the use of sugar flowers. They are very popular and have been for many years. They are easy to preserve as wedding keepsakes and they are quite beautiful and delicious.

As long as you take time to plan what you want you will be content with your selections.

Regardless of the type of flowers you may choose to use with your wedding flowers, you want something that will reflect you and you new groom, your sense of style and fashion statement. Preparing the Perfect Wedding Cake

I have come up with various ways of making extra money in order to supplement the family income throughout the years. For instance, I have typed term papers for students. However, this service is no longer profitable because we are now in computer age. I have also baked pans of bars for special events to help a local caterer. I also do special occasion cakes to earn extra money. I usually bake these cakes for birthday parties, retirement parties and anniversaries of the people I know. I willingly use different flavored cake mixes and a variety of fillings in the layer cakes. I am getting quite a few requests because my cakes are unique and tasty.

Since she was a little girl, my godchild has been the number one fan of my cakes. Every year since she was born, I have been making her birthday cake. I also made her first communion cake, confirmation cake and graduation cake. It came as no surprise to me when she asked me to make her wedding cake.

I was a bit apprehensive because I had never made one before. I had always declined the requests to bake this kind of cake through the years. This is because I was concerned since I do not have the right pans to bake a wedding cake, and I do not have the frosting skills needed for such an important event.

I explained to my godchild that I could not do her wedding cake because of these reasons. However, she told me that she did not want the traditional wedding cake with tiers and fancy piping and flowers. She wanted several individual layer cakes of different flavors and fillings. This is because she was planning to have the cakes displayed on a table with different height cake plates. The cake that she and the groom would cut also has to be her favorite flavor.

I was still apprehensive about doing it, even if she gave me an interesting idea for a wedding cake. You see, I did not feel that my decorating skills were good enough to be displayed and photographed as part of an event as important as a wedding. However, my godchild would not take no for an answer. She went on and told me what flavor combinations she wanted and which fillings. She also told me that she was not ordering any other wedding cake. She would not have any if I did not make the cakes, so I was forced to make the cakes she ordered.

I loaded all the cakes into my car on the morning of the wedding. I then drove to the banquet center where the reception was to be held. My godchild has prepared a separate table set up with different pedestal plates of varying heights to place the cakes on. I have to admit that the cakes looked very nice once I had arranged them all. Three of my godchild's friends ask if I would make a wedding cake arrangement for their weddings during the reception. This could be the start of a new business.

Wedding Cake Ideas - Princess Cake

I cannot recall the exact time of the first time I watched Cinderella but I still remember covering my face with my mom's sofa pillows as I gazed Cinderella kissing the prince in front of their fabulous wedding cake as the narrator said "...and they lived happily ever after" through the pillows edges. As I grow up, I still remember the feeling I hope I will be getting: the feeling I got when I watched the romantic cartoon. This maybe is embarrassing but true. I believe most girls in the world carry the dream of being a cartoon princess and live happily ever after in their marriage life with their prince charming in their hearts.

A princess wedding cake is a sweet touch, a dream come true, and maybe the most daring choice a girl can ever make among all wedding cake ideas. Though your prince charming doesn't dance and doesn't ride a white horse to your reception, you both still can do the kissing in front of your pretty cartoon princess wedding cake. Yes, some girls don't grow old, fellas. They just grow taller and gain more weights! Cinderella wedding has many more interesting bits; it was not only the cake, it was all the decorations, wedding outfits, guests' costumes, and impersonated side characters. See girls, if you are planning to have a princess cake; you are not loosing your sanity.

Most people might think this is childish. You don't have to settle a kiddy topper for your wedding cake; you just take the basic colors used in that princess wedding. The most famous and well known classic romantic cartoon is Cinderella. You may have your cake colored in pink and blue, as the main colors used in Cinderella was pink and blue. For some romantic touch, add white ribbons or white roses. But if you are daring enough, set a glass shoe miniature as your wedding cake topper or a pumpkin carriage candle alongside the cake as decoration.

This wedding is yours and entering new day as a married woman should be fun! You go Princess!

2010 Wedding Cake Trends

Do you know what the most stylish wedding cakes will look like this year? Are cupcakes still in? Is fondant still king? Here is everything you need to know about 2010 wedding cake trends.

A new simplicity is ruling the bakeries this year. Overly ornate and precious cakes are taking a backseat to those which are simple, elegant, and above all, delicious. After seasons as the hot wedding trend, brides are finally cooling towards cupcakes, and instead opting for a real wedding cake, usually with three tiers. Very elaborate frosting made to mimic the wedding gown and bridal jewelry is less popular than frosting which looks like...well, frosting.

Speaking of frosting, move over fondant, buttercream is back! Now this is not to say that the smooth texture of fondant is totally out of style for 2010, but with simpler cakes, there has been a definite shift back towards traditional buttercream frosting. One reason for the renewed interest in buttercream is that it looks more like icing, as opposed to the almost plastic-looking artificial effect of perfectly smooth fondant. (I once attended a wedding where a young boy simply could not be convinced that a fondant covered cake was anything but a plastic fake!) The best thing about buttercream, though, is its flavor. It just tastes delicious, which is something that no one has ever claimed about fondant.

Since delicious is a big cake trend this year, that surely means that chocolate wedding cakes will be popular, right? Right! No longer reserved for the groom's cake, rich dark chocolate has made its way to center stage on the main wedding cake. It is being used in elegant cake designs which feature architectural detailing, fresh flower accents, and a swanky use of ribbons. If you are in love with the idea of a crystal monogram to coordinate with your bridal jewelry, have it made as a flat plaque which is on the side of a tier instead of a big fanciful cake topper. Chocolate cakes are one wedding trend which your guests are guaranteed to love!

Streamlined geometric wedding cakes are also in style for 2010. A three or four tier cake with square layers will look chic this year. Motifs with clean lines suit this modern cake design, as do bands of horizontal stripes. Emphasize a minimalist chic by keeping the cake itself pure white. Festive touches of color in the motif will keep the cake from looking too plain. Symmetry is also in, by the way, so stack those square tiers with the same orientation; none of that topsy-turvy stuff that was popular a couple of years ago. The Dr. Suess look is definitely out this year.

They say that three is a magic number, and that is true for wedding cakes in 2010. A pretty way to make a statement with a simple cake is by making it in multiple. Make one medium sized cake with several tiers as the centerpiece, and then flank it with two matching mini-cakes, one on each side. This is a great idea for brides who want to keep the design of their cakes clean and modern, yet want to have a cake display with some "oomph".
